Finland : VR

VR Railways, the passenger railway network of Finnish Railways, operates an efficient and reliant rail service, and fast Intercity trains connect all major cities to Helsinki.

Innovative on-board facilities include family compartments, bicycle and ski locks, playrooms and mobile phone booths.

VR Railways operates a night train from Helsinki to Finland’s most northern passenger railway station, Kolari, beyond the Arctic Circle which takes 13 hours. The scenic route between Lappeenranta and Joensuu passes through the hilly, forest-covered countryside of Finnish Lakeland.

You can travel to St. Petersburg, Moscow or Vyborg in Russia direct from Helsinki. While there are no direct trains with VR Railways between Sweden or Norway and Finland, the bus over the gap from Boden/Luleå (Sweden) to Kemi (Finland) is free with a Eurail Pass. You can also get to Finland by ferry from Denmark, Germany or Sweden with a 50% discount on most ferries with your Pass.

There are four train types of trains on VR Railways’ network - InterCity (IC), high-speed Pendolino (EP) trains, regular express trains and slower local trains. You need seat reservations on all express trains marked ‘IC’ and ‘EP’, but you can just hop on other domestic trains with your Eurail Pass.
