Don’t miss
In Renaissance Florence, see Botticelli masterpieces in the Uffizi Gallery on Piazza della Signoria and admire Michelango’s David sculpture in the Accademia. Climb the Duomo cathedral or cross Florence’s oldest bridge, Ponte Vecchio, to the Oltrarno district, home to Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens. Close to Santa Maria Novella station is Basilica di San Lorenzo and its Michelangelo sculptures.
Retail therapy
Buy vintage clothes and leather goods at San Lorenzo’s street market or find designer and antique gems in the jewellery shops lining Ponte Vecchio. High-end Italian labels cluster around Via Tornabuoni. For local crafts, head to San Frediano or Via Maggio in Florence’s Oltrarno neighbourhood city or shop for gifts in the Santa Croce area, close to Piazza della Signoria.
Eat & drink
Florence is dotted with trattorias, osterias and cafes. Try traditional Tuscan dishes like bistecca alla Fiorentina, garlic-marinated steak, ribollita, hearty bean soup and the local white truffle. Tuscan wines are world-renowned from Montepulciano to classic Chianti. Florence’s Santo Spirito district is packed with eateries and don’t miss the ice cream parlours around Duomo.
Hidden gem
In the basement of Salvatore Ferragamo’s flagship store on Via Tornabuoni is The Salvatore Ferragamo Shoe Museum, paying homage to the ‘shoemaker to the stars’ with an eclectic collection of shoes, photos and books.
