Don’t Miss
Cross the Eiserner Steg (Iron Bridge) to Sachsenhausen, the Old Town, and relish the views over the futuristic skyline. The beautiful Gothic style Saint Bartholomeus’s Cathedral built in the 14th and 15th centuries looms over the city, but take the time to visit the cathedral museum.
Retail Therapy
Frankfurt has three major train stations and the Hauptbahnhof is one of Europe’s biggest, busiest and most strikingly designed – worth a visit for the shopping alone. The famous Zeil road is filled with all the high street favourites and department stores.
Eat and Drink
Tasty and cheap a Frankfurter is a must. Visit Sachsenhausen for the many traditional taverns or kneipen where you can try the local ebbelwoi – a bit like cider but more tart.
Hidden Gem
The nearby neighbourhoods of Bockenheim, Bornheim and Nordend are little visited by tourists. But with beautifully intact 19th century streets and nature parks, they’re a wonderful and vibrant secret.
Day Trip
Less than an hour away by train from Frankfurt is Heidelberg in the scenic Neckar Valley. The historic city is home to the Alte Brucke Bridge, a huge castle and the Thingstätte, an open-air theatre built by the Nazi regime to host propaganda events.
