Overview

Amsterdam, capital city of the Netherlands

Amsterdam, capital city of the Netherlands

Amsterdam, the capital city of the Netherlands, is located in the province of North Holland. The city got its name from a dam in the river Amstel and was a small fishing village at its creation. Nowadays Amsterdam is a busy seaport and one of the top European financial centres as well as a major cultural hub. The canals, world-famous museums and historical sights makes Amsterdam one of the most romantic and beautiful cities in Europe. It has all the advantages of a big city: culture, nightlife, restaurants with international cuisine, good transport system. However, the city has also a quiet and relaxed atmosphere largely thanks to its extensive canals, low road traffic, small green parks and flower fields. In Amsterdam, places of interest are never far away, get a bike or hop on a tram for an authentic local experience. Amsterdam can be reached easily by train from other European capitals - Paris, London or Brussels.

About Netherlands

Any visitor coming to Amsterdam by Thalys will step off at the Amsterdam Centraal Station. Head to the nearby Oude Zijde (old side) quarter. Its streets are packed with historic buildings and most notably the Oude Kerk, which is the oldest church in Amsterdam. This beautiful Gothic Basilica is now in the heart of the Red Light District! Afterwards, walk along the canal to reach Damstraat (Dam Street) which will lead you to the Dam Square.

Found in the very heart of the city, the square marks the place where the 13th century dam on the Amstel River was located. From boutiques and restaurants to monuments and museum, the square is encircled by several attractions. With more than 150 canals, a canal cruise in Amsterdam is not to be missed. Why not seize the opportunity to have lunch during a pancake cruise. After lunch, take the tram from the Dam Square to reach the Van Gogh Museum, which houses more than 200 paintings, letters and other personal stuff of the artist. As the evening is gently approaching, walk to the Vondelpark to let the steam off.

Don’t miss a detour to a Bruin Café for a taste of authentic Amsterdam flavour and Dutch culture. These local institutions with a laid-back atmosphere are a quintessential part of Amsterdam’s culture. They serve local beers, tea, coffee as well as the Jenever, a Dutch spirit alongside with meals. Hapjes (snacks) such as Bitterballen (deep-fried balls) are usually offered. Taste local cheese like the Edam and Gouda.

If you are looking for a shopping experience, you can either go to the De Bijenkorf, Amsterdam’s best-known department store or to Damrak, an effervescent shopping street.
